Zim Table Tennis Team builds on SARC momentum as Commonwealth challenge begins in India
ZIMBABWE’s national table tennis team has arrived in India for the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships, carrying the momentum of a promising Southern Africa Regional Championships campaign as it prepares to test itself against some of the sport’s strongest nations.
The seven member squad travelled to New Delhi after competing at the Southern Africa Regional Championships, which Zimbabwe successfully hosted earlier this month. The tournament provided the players with valuable match practice against some of the region’s leading competitors ahead of the Commonwealth event.
The men’s team is made up of Vikram Singh, Brian Chamboko, Tatenda Mumvuma, Tinotenda Fambira and Tapiwa Musarurwa, while Naama Boterere and Vongai Zhwakim will represent Zimbabwe in the women’s competition.
National coach Wang Liping is leading the technical team, while international umpire Robinson Chigede will also represent Zimbabwe at the championships in an official capacity.
The squad wasted no time after arriving in New Delhi, holding its first training sessions as part of the final phase of preparations. The early arrival will allow the players to adjust to India’s hot and humid conditions before competition begins.
The Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union said participation at the championships forms an important part of its long term strategy to expose local players to elite international competition.
“The Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships provide our athletes with a unique opportunity to compete against some of the best players in the Commonwealth. This level of international competition is critical for player development, world ranking opportunities and exposing our athletes to different styles of play,” the union said.
“We are confident that the work done during our preparations has positioned the team well to represent Zimbabwe with pride.”
The championships are expected to provide another important benchmark for a Zimbabwe side that has shown encouraging progress in recent months under Wang Liping’s guidance.
The union said the tournament also supports its long term vision of increasing Zimbabwe’s presence at major international competitions while improving the country’s competitiveness on the continental and global stage.
It also thanked its partners, sponsors and stakeholders whose support made the team’s participation possible.
