MOSES Chihuri has pledged to focus on results and advancing the interests of Zimbabwe’s retail and wholesale sector following his appointment as national chairman of the Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR) for a two year term.
Chihuri, who has previously represented CZR on industry matters, takes up the leadership position at a time when retailers are grappling with operating costs, competition from the informal sector and efforts to improve the business environment.
Reacting to his appointment, Chihuri said he was pleased to join the organisation’s leadership and pledged to execute his responsibilities diligently.
He said his focus would be on working with the CZR leadership and its membership to deliver results expected from his new role.
In a statement announcing the appointment, CZR said it expected Chihuri to contribute towards strengthening the organisation’s representation of retailers and wholesalers.
“We wish you success and strength as you assume this important responsibility. We look forward to your leadership, commitment and contribution towards advancing the interests of the retail and wholesale sector,” CZR said.
Chihuri has previously spoken publicly on challenges facing formal businesses, including illicit and counterfeit products. In March, while serving as a CZR board member, he warned that counterfeit goods threatened legitimate manufacturers, employment and investment.
His appointment also comes as businesses adjust to changes introduced under Statutory Instrument 41 of 2026, the Model Fees By-laws, which provide a framework for rationalising local authority licensing and registration charges.
The regulations cap, reduce or abolish a range of charges affecting businesses, including several licences associated with operations conducted within retail shops.
CZR has been advocating measures aimed at reducing the cost of doing business, encouraging formalisation and strengthening the competitiveness of formal retailers.
Chihuri will now be expected to help steer those engagements during his two year tenure while representing the interests of the retail and wholesale sector.
