PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has granted late businessman Wicknell Chivayo Provincial Hero status in recognition of his contribution to society.

Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Hon. Tino Machakaire announced the conferment this evening at Chivayo’s family home in Gletwyn, Chishawasha Hills.

“President Emmerson Mnangagwa has granted businessman Wicknell Chivayo Provincial Hero status. The conferment of the honour recognises Chivayo’s contribution to society,” Minister Machakaire said. 8608

Chivayo, 43, died alongside his wife Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, two pilots Courage Mutavirwa and Calvin Tafirei Soda, and Sanelisiwe Magagula when their helicopter crashed in Marondera Rural on 30 September. Government has confirmed there were no survivors.

There was an emotional moment at Gletwyn this afternoon when the children of the late businessman and his ex-wife Sonja arrived at the Chivayo residence where scores of mourners are gathered. The children were received by family spokesperson Mr Herbert Chivayo.

President Mnangagwa later joined mourners at Gletwyn, together with senior Government officials, Cabinet Ministers and ZANU PF Politburo members, to console the Chivayo and Muteke families.

In an earlier tribute, President Mnangagwa said he was shattered by the sudden death, describing Chivayo as “consummately philanthropic” whose family “touched so many lives” through acts of charity and generosity.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in liaison with Government following the conferment of Provincial Hero status.
