Chibuku Neshamwari Festival Roars Back to Life
THE drumbeat of tradition is calling once again as the iconic Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival makes its highly anticipated return.
Running under the electrifying theme “Ngoma Ngairire Shamwari! Tshay’sgubhu Mngane!” (Let the drums sound, my friend! Hit the beat, mate!), the festival promises a dazzling celebration of Zimbabwean culture and heritage through dance.
Now in its 61st year, the Chibuku Neshamwari Festival organized in partnership with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) and the Zimbabwe National Traditional Dance Association (ZNTDA) will run from May 10 to July 19, 2025, with ten vibrant provincial finals culminating in a grand national showdown.
The festival, which has long stood as a pillar of cultural expression, invites traditional dance groups from across the country to compete for prestigious titles and generous cash prizes. Last year, Mashonaland East claimed the crown with a captivating performance of the Mbende dance setting the bar high for this year’s hopefuls.
At each of the provincial finals, dancers will battle for:
- 1st Prize: USD 2,500
- 2nd Prize: USD 1,500
- 3rd Prize: USD 1,000
Those who advance to the national finals will have even more to dance for:
- 1st Prize: USD 15,000
- 2nd Prize: USD 10,000
- 3rd Prize: USD 7,500
Groups eager to take part are encouraged to register with the NACZ and ZNTDA ahead of their provincial showcases.
