Chibuku Road to Fame: Raising the Bar for Zimbabwean Music

EVERY year, the Chibuku Road to Fame competition reminds Zimbabwe of the incredible talent hidden in its communities.

The 2025 edition is proving no different. More than just a contest, it has become a stage where young musicians test their creativity, celebrate culture, and push the boundaries of local music.

Last weekend in Bulawayo, the energy at Sekunjalo Bar showed exactly why the event matters. Twenty bands from afro fusion to sungura delivered high energy performances that had judges and fans talking. In the end, Dab Band and Bolamba Culture Birds took the top spots, but the real story was the depth of talent on display.

For many groups, the competition is more than prize money. It is a chance to grow.

Now all eyes turn to Masvingo, Mashonaland East, and Manicaland, where more bands will step up this weekend hoping to secure their place in the national showdown. Only one group from each province will qualify, joining the growing list of finalists preparing for October’s grand finale.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Chibuku Road to Fame, and the platform continues to live up to its name by giving grassroots talent a chance to rise. With US$15,000 and a recording contract on the line, the competition is not just about winning. It is about shaping the future of Zimbabwean music.
