Chido Chizondo Takes the Helm of ZWPSL

CHIDO Chizondo, the driving force behind Platinum Royals, has been elected chairperson of the Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League (ZWPSL) after defeating Black Rhinos’ Nthokoziso Moyo in a 13–3 vote during the league’s Elective General Meeting at Yadah Hotel in Harare.

She takes over from Theresa Maguraushe, who had been serving in an interim capacity since March 2023.

In her first speech as chairperson, Chizondo struck an inclusive tone, urging everyone to come together to support and grow the women’s game.

“I sincerely appreciate your trust in me to help me reshape the narrative surrounding women’s football,” she said.
“The game is advancing positively, and it is our duty to guide our girls towards success.”

Chizondo acknowledged the work of the outgoing leadership, especially their efforts in raising both the standards and the profile of the league.

“Over the past year, the outgoing board has worked tirelessly to enhance the perfection and the perception of our league,” she noted.
“Through the Heart League and the Heart Tournament, we’ve seen the league’s potential come to life. Our goal is to build on that strong foundation.”

She stressed that accountability and collective responsibility will be essential to take the league forward.

“As we move forward together, accountability is vital. This game belongs to us, and we must take ownership,” she said.
“Through unity and commitment, we can create an environment where every player has the opportunity to shine and realize their full potential.”

Inclusivity and mutual respect, Chizondo said, are cornerstones of her leadership approach.

“Our community is rich in talent and passion, and it is imperative that we cultivate a culture of inclusivity and respect that allows every player, every coach, and every administrator to contribute and to benefit from football,” she said.
“We aspire to excel on the field and empower our players off it—giving them the confidence and life skills they need.”

Calling on all stakeholders to support the women’s game meaningfully, Chizondo said the league must be valued not just for its entertainment, but for its role in shaping lives.

“By investing in training and support systems, we can ensure our players are prepared to face the challenges of tomorrow,” she said.
“Together, we can foster a legacy that transcends the boundaries of the field, inspiring future generations to embrace the values of teamwork and perseverance.”

She also emphasized the importance of grassroots development and nurturing young talent.

“The future is in the grassroots. Let’s celebrate the achievements of the previous board and focus on developing our girls from an early age,” Chizondo concluded.

The meeting also confirmed the rest of the league’s executive committee. Correctional Queens’ Lewis Muzhara was elected unopposed as vice chairperson. Other board members include James Shamuyarira Mupfudza, Sibusisiwe Dube Rugwevera, Mercy Makuwatsine, and Talent Chitsaka. A fifth woman board member will be appointed by the new executive to meet constitutional requirements.

Outgoing chairperson Theresa Maguraushe reflected warmly on her time in charge.

“As I step down as chairperson, I’m proud of what we have achieved together,” she said.
“I’m confident that the Zimbabwe Women Premier Soccer League is in good hands. To my successor, I offer these words of wisdom: never lose sight of our objectives, remain committed to our values, and always put the needs of our players first.”

She expressed her gratitude and pledged her ongoing support.

“To the ZWPSL family, I’m honoured to have served you. I will always cherish the memories, the laughter, and the tears,” she said.
“I will continue to support and advocate for women’s football. Together, we will create a brighter future for our league.”
