Controversy Erupts Over Musicians’ Alleged Promotion of Drug Use

MEMBER of Parliament Taurai Dexter Malinganiso has sparked debate after accusing local musicians Hulengende and Malloti of promoting drug use and explicit behavior among young people through their music and social media platforms.
Malinganiso emphasized that artists with large followings have a responsibility to set positive examples for the country’s youth.
Speaking in Parliament, Malinganiso said the trend is alarming, pointing out that influencers are openly normalizing drug and substance abuse on social media.
He warned that this content erodes societal values and threatens the moral fabric of the nation. “We are witnessing watching our youth being lled astray by these so-called role models,” Malinganiso said.
The MP’s comments have garnered support from citizens, who argue that freedom of expression comes with responsibility. “Freedom without responsibility is dangerous,” tweeted @Ransom Ramsey Mussa. Others echoed this sentiment, calling for artists to respect societal morals, cultural values, and ethics.
Some citizens highlighted the impact on young people, saying artists should be mindful of their influence. “Music has to respect our morals, values, culture, and ethics,” said @OdugwuWeZim. Another user added, “Imagine taking drugs in front of kids… what picture are you setting for the kid?” Some called for action against the musicians, with one user saying, “Ngavamiswe ana Malloti venyu, it’s totally wrong” (They should be arrested, it’s totally wrong).
The controversy highlights the ongoing debate about the influence of social media and music on young people in Zimbabwe. Experts say social media has amplified the reach and impact of music, making it crucial for artists to promote positive messages.
Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have become breeding grounds for influencers and artists to showcase their lifestyles, often blurring the lines between reality and entertainment. This can lead to young fans emulating behaviors they see online, including substance abuse.
The implications are significant:
- Normalization of substance abuse: Artists promoting drug use can contribute to a culture where it’s seen as acceptable.
- Influence on youth behavior: Young fans may mimic behaviors they see online, affecting their well-being and choices.
- Responsibility of artists: As influencers, artists have a duty to promote positive values and messages.
Hulengende and Malloti have not publicly responded to the allegations. The controversy has sparked a national conversation about the role of artists in shaping societal values and the need for responsible social media use.
