DR Auxillia Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe’s First Lady, graced the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) championship coronation on Saturday, when Scottland FC lifted the trophy after a 2‑1 victory over TelOne at Ascot Stadium.
Dressed in a sleek suit, the guest of honour remained on the sidelines for the full 90 minutes, soaking up the atmosphere and signalling a fresh wave of support for domestic football.
Her presence was more than ceremonial. By cheering a spectacular goal from TelOne striker Tawanda Macheka, Dr Mnangagwa demonstrated that her attendance was not a token gesture but an affirmation of the sport’s national significance.
“She was there not just to celebrate Scottland’s triumph but as the mother of a nation, embracing every player on the pitch,” noted Rodwell Thabe, PSL spokesperson.
Thabe praised the visit as a strategic win for the league.
“Hosting a figure of the First Lady’s stature reinforces our values, strengthens ties with government and regulators, and projects a positive image,” he said.
He added that the well‑orchestrated event enhanced the league’s reputation and opened doors for future high‑profile engagements.
The match also highlighted the growing celebrity cachet of the PSL. With Dr Mnangagwa in attendance, a host of celebrities have graced the Premiership this season Prophet Uebert Angel, former minister Ignatius Chombo, fashion mogul Pokello Nare, and musicians Jah Prayzah, Killer T and Enzo Ishall. Their presence turned Scottland’s rise into a cultural moment, drawing crowds eager to be part of the action.
“Looking ahead, the PSL faces a clear challenge: translate this surge of interest into sustained attendance and sponsorship,” added Thabe.
“With the championship’s success and the First Lady’s endorsement, the league has a blueprint for attracting more dignitaries and solidifying its brand in the months to come.”
