International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah touched down in Zimbabwe yesterday, expressing hope that his visit will inspire a resurgence in the country’s cricketing fortunes.
Speaking briefly upon arrival at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, Shah reflected on Zimbabwe’s rich cricket history and voiced optimism about the nation’s potential to return to its former heights.
“I’m delighted to be here and grateful for the warm welcome from the Zimbabwe Cricket chairperson and his board,” Shah said. “Zimbabwe has the potential to return to the top, just like in the early 1990s.”
He paid tribute to legendary Zimbabwean cricketers, such as Edo Brandes and the Flower brothers, acknowledging their contributions to the game and the nation’s proud cricketing legacy.
“They had players like Edo Brandes and the Flower brothers—hardworking and immensely talented,” he said. “I believe, and I hope, that following this visit, Zimbabwe Cricket can rise again.”
Shah is in the country for a series of ICC board and committee meetings, which will be held in Harare and Victoria Falls from April 10 to 13. This marks the first time Zimbabwe is hosting the ICC’s full board meetings, a milestone for both the country and Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC).
ZC managing director Givemore Makoni described the occasion as a significant moment for the organization and the nation.
“This is a first for Zimbabwe, and we’re thrilled,” said Makoni. “We’ve hosted international matches, and now a major global cricket conference. It’s a big endorsement—not only for ZC but also for Zimbabwe as a safe and attractive destination.”
