MUFAKOSE BATTLES SEVERE SEWAGE CRISIS

MUFAKOSE residents have raised alarm over a decade-long struggle to access sewage facilities, blaming land disputes and alleged encroachment by neighbouring Parkridge stands for worsening the crisis.

In 2017, they contributed US$120 per household for the construction of a sewage system, but nothing has materialised, forcing them to rely on septic tanks while others use Blair toilets.

The community’s frustration worsened when it discovered that its planned sewer line route had been occupied by stands which were built in a wetland close to a stream.

A resident of Mufakose since 2012, Lisa Zirevo, expressed frustration over the matter.

“We built our homes with hope, but now we are living with sewage flowing in our yards. We need urgent intervention before we experience cholera outbreaks,” Zirevo said.

“At first, we were told that our sewer line was supposed to be joined with other areas near our line, but when it was approved, we were told that we are going to connect to some Sewage Treatment Works l cant remember the name.

“Now we want to get work done and our development is being disturbed by these new stands.”

Another resident Prosper Wezana highlighted that people are now opting the use of plastic bags so as to help themselves since flash toilets are blocked.

“Do we still have a local Authority in Harare? This is heartbreaking, residents are now deserting houses in Mufakose especially Nondo Street and Hohodza Close due to sewerage flooding their houses, with some now defecating in plastic bags as their toilets are no longer accessible.

“This level of negligence expose the leadership at Town House, and creates a perception that no one cares, residents are now on their own.

“To make matters worse diarrhea cases are now emerging in this area,” he said.
