THE Premier Netball League (PNL) is set to host the inaugural PinkOctober Netball Tournament at the Aquatic Complex in Chitungwiza uniting the community in the ongoing battle against cancer on Saturday.
Themed “Together We Can Make a Difference,” this event aims to raise awareness about cancer, with a particular focus on breast cancer.
Organised by the PNL and Chitungwiza Municipality, the tournament will bring together at least 20 teams from various backgrounds, including professional players, social clubs, and corporate entities.
Innocent Ndiya, the PNL’s Public Relations and Media Officer, highlighted the tournament’s importance in fostering community spirit and unity in the fight against cancer.
The event will serve as a platform for raising awareness about cancer and its impact on families and communities, as well as a fundraising initiative for the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe.
The participating teams will be categorised by their affiliations, creating a diverse mix of players and supporters.
“The teams will be grouped together for the tournament, so you’ll notice that bank clubs, league teams, and social groups will be divided into different pools. This yearly event is a collaboration between PNL and the Chitungwiza Municipality, where netballers from all backgrounds come together, ” Ndiya explained.
“As PNL, we aim to be a professional league that empowers young girls in every way possible. That’s why we think it’s essential to raise awareness about cancer. Our primary focus is breast cancer because we believe that women are the most affected, and they need our support and initiatives.”
By involving sports personalities, PNL aims to influence public perceptions and understanding of cancer.
The tournament will also feature educational programs aimed at dispelling myths surrounding cancer and empowering the community to take proactive steps in cancer prevention and early detection.
As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, the PinkOctober Netball Tournament aligns perfectly with national efforts to promote early detection and treatment.
PNL envisions this event expanding beyond Chitungwiza, reaching other provinces and communities throughout Zimbabwe in the future.
The aim of this tournament lies in its ability to foster hope, encourage the community to take charge of their health, and make a significant impact in the fight against cancer.
The event is made possible by partners Nedbank, First Mutual, Manhanga Mining, Sports and Recreation Commission, Doves and The Cancer Association of Zimbabwe.
