Shihan Mashaya Leads Young Zim Martial Artists to Hero’s Welcome After 43-Medal Victory

SHIHAN Wilfred Mashaya and his team of eight young Zimbabwean martial artists received a hero’s welcome at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport after returning from the International Combat Organisation (ICO) World Championships in Swansea, Wales on Tuesday.

The team made the nation proud by winning a total of 43 medals 14 gold, 18 silver, and 11 bronze.

Family members, friends, and supporters filled the airport, waving Zimbabwean flags and cheering as the team walked out wearing their medals and team tracksuits. The crowd sang, clapped, and celebrated the young champions’ success with joy and pride.

Adding to the excitement, members of the Zim Ninja Academy performed powerful martial arts displays, showcasing flips, kicks, and weapon routines that impressed everyone watching.

Also present were members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police, who provided transport for parents and helped maintain order as crowds gathered to celebrate. Representatives from Sports for ED, Hustlers for ED, and officials from the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Education also joined in welcoming the young heroes who brought glory to Zimbabwe.

The team, aged between eight and sixteen, represented the Zimbabwe Martial Arts Weapon or Kobudo Team under the Zimbabwe Karate Union.
Schools represented included David Livingstone Primary School, Rusununguko Government Primary School, ZRP Tomlinson Depot Primary School, St John’s Emerald Hill High School, Corpus Christi High School, The Lookeron School, and Avondale Primary School, whose teachers and pupils also came to show their support.

Parents expressed their pride in the children’s achievements, saying they had carried the Zimbabwean flag high.

One of the young athletes, Anotida Hove, gave a touching speech thanking parents and Shihan Mashaya for their guidance and support.

“It was a struggle to find resources and sponsorship, but we thank our parents and Shihan Mashaya for standing with us and helping us shine on the world stage,” she said.

The world championships featured teams from Spain, Italy, the USA, Brazil, South Africa, Germany, France, Nepal, England, Zimbabwe, and many other countries, making Zimbabwe’s success even more special.
