TelOne Secure PSL Survival in Dramatic Comeback

TelOne FC have pulled off a stunning escape from the jaws of relegation, securing their spot in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) for the 2025 season.

The Gweru-based side’s fate was in the balance after a dismal 2019 campaign that saw them finish a disappointing 15th. However, this time around, the WiFi Boys have shown remarkable grit and determination, defying the odds to climb up the table and ensure their top-flight status.

The turning point came in a crucial victory over Arenel Movers, where a well-taken header by seasoned midfielder Leo Hofisi in the 46th minute sealed the crucial three points. This result propelled TelOne from 11th to 10th position, a position they will be more than content to hold onto as the season draws to a close.

Head coach Herbert “Jompano” Maruwa was understandably delighted with his side’s efforts, praising the team’s character and the support of the club’s loyal fanbase.

“I’m happy for the technical team, the boys, and everyone who is associated with the team to survive relegation,” Maruwa said. “We have to make sure that we come back in 2025 with a different face altogether,” Maruwa said.

The WiFi Boys’ turnaround was sparked by a remarkable four-match winning streak, a far cry from their struggles earlier in the campaign. Victories over Bikita Minerals, Chegutu Pirates, and Caps United, among others, have instilled a renewed sense of confidence within the squad.

Goalkeeper Criss Mverechena has been a standout performer for TelOne, with his heroics between the sticks proving pivotal in securing crucial points throughout the season. Maruwa was quick to praise the shot-stopper, acknowledging his vital contribution to the team’s survival bid.

With relegation now firmly off the table, TelOne can look ahead to the 2025 season with a renewed sense of optimism. The club’s management and supporters will undoubtedly be eager to see the team build on this remarkable turnaround and push for a higher finish in the league standings.

As the curtain falls on the 2024 campaign, TelOne’s grit and determination have shown that they are more than worthy of their place in the PSL. The 2025 season promises to be an exciting one for the Gweru-based outfit as they look to cement their status as a force to be reckoned with in Zimbabwean football.
