ZIMBABWE’s Cabinet has approved the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (2026-2030), a groundbreaking plan to propel the country into a digital powerhouse. The strategy aims to harness AI’s economic potential while mitigating its disruptive impact across industries.
According to Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Jenfan Muswere, the plan builds upon existing legislation, including the Cyber and Data Protection Act and the Postal and Telecommunications Act, providing a strong legal foundation for AI governance and innovation.
The five-year strategy is anchored in the country’s ICT Architecture and National ICT Policy, with the goal of accelerating Zimbabwe’s transition to a knowledge-based economy. It seeks to ensure that emerging technologies promote inclusive and resilient development guided by Zimbabwean values.
Key focus areas include talent development, digital infrastructure, AI adoption, research, and international collaboration.
To operationalize the strategy, the government will launch several flagship projects, including a national AI competition to encourage innovation among students and developers, a national data platform to facilitate access to quality data for AI research and development, an AI literacy campaign to improve public understanding, and a regulatory sandbox to test emerging AI applications in a safe environment.
Two new institutions, the National Digital Regulatory Committee and the AI Strategy Implementation Office, will be established to coordinate the rollout of AI initiatives, oversee regulatory compliance, and foster collaboration between government, academia, and the private sector.
A fund will also be created to support AI-focused startups and research projects, demonstrating the government’s commitment to building a robust innovation ecosystem.
By leveraging AI, Zimbabwe aims to drive economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development, marking a significant step in the country’s effort to responsibly embrace digital technologies.
