Masiyiwa Family Tightens Grip on Econet Leadership

STRIVE Masiyiwa’s daughters, Sarah and Elizabeth, now both serve on the Econet Wireless board marking a new chapter in the family’s direct role at the helm of the telecommunications giant.

The latest appointment, effective 1 October 2025, brings Sarah onto the board as an Alternate Director, joining her elder sister Elizabeth, who has held a seat since April 2022.

The move underlines the growing involvement of the next generation in the company their father, now Zimbabwe’s richest man, built from the ground up.

In a statement released on 30 September, the Board of Directors confirmed two appointments: veteran executive Tracy Mpofu as a Non-Executive Director, and Sarah as her Alternate Director.

Mpofu’s appointment comes after decades of leadership within the Econet Group, where she has served as Group Chief Finance Officer, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Operating Officer. A Chartered Accountant with an MBA from the University of Zimbabwe, she has over four decades of experience in telecommunications and the fast-moving consumer goods industry.

Alongside her, Sarah joins the board with a wide-ranging international background. She studied Economics and Journalism at New York University and has worked across investment, business development, and film production with major global media companies. She currently manages a portfolio of private and public investments, with oversight of their legal and financial frameworks.

Elizabeth, the first of Masiyiwa’s children to join the board in 2022, is a senior executive, social entrepreneur, and philanthropist. She is Head of Design and Innovation at Higherlife Foundation, serves on the Harvard University Leadership Council for the Centre of African Studies, and has studied at Cambridge University, Bayes Business School, and Hult International Business School.

With both sisters now on the Econet board, their family’s role in shaping the company’s future is more visible than ever.

Econet Board Chairman, Dr James Myers, welcomed the appointments.

“The Board of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe Limited congratulates Tracy Mpofu and the Masiyiwa daughters on their appointments and looks forward to their valuable contributions,” Dr Myers said.
