SRC urges calm after firearm incident at Eaglesvale school rugby match
THE Sports and Recreation Commission has called for calm and warned against speculation after a firearm incident and assault were reported at a schools rugby match in Harare on June 13.
SRC Director-General Allen Mavhunga urged parents, guardians, supporters, schools and sports administrators to avoid interfering with police investigations.
“Remain calm and allow the Zimbabwe Republic Police to complete its investigations without interference or speculation,” Mavhunga said in a statement released Monday.
The incident occurred during a rugby fixture between Eaglesvale College and Christian Brothers College at Eaglesvale College, the SRC said.
Police confirmed they are investigating a firearm-related incident and an assault case arising from the match.
“As the national regulator of sport in Zimbabwe, the SRC firmly upholds the values of sportsmanship, respect, discipline, fair play and the safety and well-being of all participants, officials and spectators,” Mavhunga said.
He said sporting venues, especially those involving children, must remain safe environments where competition is conducted with mutual respect and where the welfare of young athletes is paramount.
The SRC cautioned against the spread of unverified information, saying it could prejudice ongoing investigations.
The commission said it is ready to engage with relevant sporting and educational authorities to preserve the integrity, safety and positive values of school sport.
The SRC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting school sport and promoting safety, respect and positive values across all school sporting activities in Zimbabwe.
