ZIMBABWE’S senior men’s volleyball team had everything ready for Tunisia, including a brand-new international-standard kit, but will not get the chance to wear it after logistical challenges forced the country out of a crucial tournament on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) pulled the plug on the Tunisia mission barely a day after local sportswear manufacturer Genesis Sporting unveiled playing and technical team apparel specifically prepared for the assignment.
The dramatic turn of events has transformed what was supposed to be a celebration of corporate support and Zimbabwe’s progress in the sport into another painful reminder of the logistical hurdles confronting national teams competing internationally.
The senior men’s side had been due to leave for Tunisia tomorrow to compete in the African Volleyball Championship, billed as the final leg of the Olympic qualification campaign.
But ZVA confirmed that the journey was off.
“Please be formally advised that the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association has officially withdrawn the Senior Men’s Volleyball Team from the upcoming African Volleyball Championship in Tunisia,” the association said.
“This hard and painful decision has been necessitated by logistical challenges.”
ZVA did not disclose the precise nature of the challenges that made the trip impossible, but said the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) and the host federation had been formally notified.
The association acknowledged the disappointment for players and officials who had worked towards the qualification campaign.
“While we are deeply saddened to miss the opportunity to represent our nation and region with pride, we extend our sincere gratitude to the athletes, technical team, sponsors, donors, partners, media, supporters, Board, and Executive Committee for their unwavering faith and effort throughout this process,” ZVA said.
The withdrawal is particularly painful given the optimism that surrounded the team only a day earlier.
At Friday’s kit unveiling in Harare, ZVA president Mxolisi Ndlovu described reaching the final qualification stage as a historic achievement and hailed Genesis for backing the team at a critical moment.
“This is a massive boost for our senior men’s team. Qualifying for the final round of the Olympic qualifiers is historic in itself, and to have a local brand like Genesis step in and dress the team to FIVB standards shows the confidence they have in volleyball,” Ndlovu said.
“We want to thank Genesis for coming on board. Our goal is clear, to go to Tunisia and compete for a place at the Olympics, and looking the part is the first step.”
That first step, however, will not be followed by another in Tunisia.
Genesis founder and managing director Zorodzai Damiso had personally backed the kit initiative after the national team’s technical department approached his company for assistance.
Genesis, which has previously worked with football and cricket teams, produced apparel for both the players and technical bench.
Damiso said the company had even considered Tunisia’s weather conditions when selecting the material.
“The technical team approached me and said we have this programme where we are trying to qualify for the Los Angeles Olympics. We know you have worked with us at club level, but can you do something for us? I heard that plea and decided to return the gesture,” Damiso said.
“I took into consideration the temperatures as well as player comfort. I had to source the best fabrics which would suit the level of competition they are now going to face in Tunisia.”
Second assistant coach Gift Chirebvu had also praised the quality of the apparel, saying it satisfied requirements for international volleyball competition.
“In volleyball there is what we call kit homologation. The FIVB gives standards that say a kit should have certain qualities, certain prints and texture of material. We are very happy that all of that is available,” Chirebvu said.
The irony is difficult to ignore.
A local company answered the national team’s call and ensured Zimbabwe was equipped to look the part on the international stage, only for circumstances away from the volleyball court to prevent the players from getting there.
For a team chasing what would have been Zimbabwe’s first Olympic appearance in volleyball, the disappointment extends beyond missing another international tournament.
The players had earned an opportunity to continue testing themselves against continental opposition on the road to Los Angeles 2028.
