Marinica pays bill for Antonio sub as Warriors miss magic duo’s spark

ZIMBABWE’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign suffered a setback after the Warriors were held to a 1-1 draw by Angola in an entertaining match played in Morocco on Friday afternoon.

The game will be remembered for Bill Antonio’s excellent right-foot cross that set up Knowledge Musona’s equaliser. It will also be remembered for head coach Mario Marinica’s decision to substitute Antonio, a move that changed the flow of the match.

Angola took the lead in the 24th minute through Delson Dala, whose shot left goalkeeper Washington Arubi with no chance. The goal reflected Angola’s dominance, as they controlled possession and applied sustained pressure.

Zimbabwe responded just before halftime. Antonio delivered a precise cross from the left, which Musona controlled with his right foot before firing a powerful shot to make it 1-1.

In the second half, Marinica replaced Musona and Antonio with Tawanda Chirewa and Ishmael Wadi. The substitutions appeared to weaken Zimbabwe’s attack and reduce their threat going forward.

Former Warriors captain Willard Katsande shared his view on SABC Sport:

“You could see these two were by far our best feet forward. The coach knows his players better, but we know what Knowledge gives to the squad, especially when he’s on song. I felt both players needed a bit more time on the pitch.”

After the changes, Zimbabwe found it difficult to trouble the Angolan defence. Antonio’s absence was clear. When chances did come, Chirewa shot wide, while Jonah Fabisch came close with a long-range effort that almost won the game for the Warriors.

Angola dominated possession and had more shots on target but failed to turn that advantage into a win. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will be left frustrated by missed chances and key tactical decisions.

The Warriors will reflect on what might have been, but their campaign goes on. They now face a must-win match against South Africa, a tough challenge ahead.
