Zim U20 volleyball team ready to turn the tide

THE Zimbabwe Under 20 men’s volleyball team is refusing to give up on their quest for a podium finish, setting their sights on a semifinal spot as they face Cameroon in the quarterfinals of the CAVB 2025 Men’s U20 African Nations Championship at Hassan Mostafa Hall in Cairo, Egypt.

Despite a tough start to the tournament, losing all three group stage matches against hosts Egypt, Uganda, and Algeria, the team’s determination remains unwavering.

A rare display of national unity has been a significant morale booster for the team. The nation rallied behind them, providing crucial support that enabled their participation in the continental championship. This outpouring of support has been a great motivator for the players.

Head coach Kudzai Bakayidza is confident that his team can put their group stage performances behind them and make a strong push for a semifinal spot.

“The preparations we had back home ahead of the tournament were challenging, but the timely support from the nation has been a huge motivation for the boys,” he said.

“Despite the defeats, we saw progression from the first game to the last, and the guys are psyched up to make a strong comeback.”

Bakayidza believes that with some adjustments, his team can turn the tables around.

“We’re not far off in terms of competitiveness. It’s about fine-tuning the little things that matter when playing at this level. The environment and exposure are crucial, and it takes time to adjust. But I’m confident that if we regroup and work hard, we can deliver a strong performance.”

The coach is optimistic about his team’s chances.

“I’m not promising much, but we’ll push hard to make the nation proud and fly the flag higher.”
