Two die as church lorry rams truck on Chivhu Nyazura Road

TWO people died and two others were injured when a lorry carrying church congregants rammed into a stationary haulage truck on the Chivhu Nyazura Road on Friday evening, police have confirmed.

The crash occurred at around 18:35 on 2 May 2026 at the 72 kilometre peg near Mapisa Curve, close to Muzadzi Business Centre in Buhera.

Zimbabwe Republic Police national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said a Mitsubishi Canter carrying 15 church members hit the rear of an Iveco lowbed haulage truck that had broken down.

“Two people were killed while two others were injured when a Mitsubishi Canter truck carrying 15 church congregants rammed into the back of a stationary Iveco lowbed haulage truck which had developed a mechanical fault,” Nyathi said.

The two victims died at the scene. The injured were taken to Murambinda Mission Hospital, but their names and conditions were not disclosed.

Police said the haulage truck had no warning triangles or visible lights at the time of impact, and visibility was poor as night fell. The Canter was travelling from a church service in Chivhu to Buhera when the crash occurred.

The Chivhu Nyazura stretch has recorded several fatal crashes in recent years, with police urging drivers to exercise caution around curves and to properly mark broken down vehicles. The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe has warned that carrying passengers in open lorries increases the risk of injury during collisions.

The identities of the deceased had not been released as police were still notifying next of kin. Investigations into speed, lighting and the mechanical condition of both vehicles are ongoing.
