Chauluka balances growth and results as Zim A adapt to Bangladesh heat

ZIMBABWE A head coach, Erick Chauluka, says the tour of Bangladesh is serving a dual purpose of player development and immediate performance outcomes.

Chauluka described the assignment as a careful blend of “growth and results”, with the squad using the tour to adapt to demanding sub-continent conditions while also building winning confidence ahead of senior team international commitments in June and July.

Zim A head coach believes exposure to hot, humid environments will be crucial in shaping players for higher honours, particularly as Zimbabwe continues to deepen its player pool across formats.

“It’s about exposure in these conditions and preparing for competitive international cricket, but also about getting results to boost confidence,” Chauluka noted.

Almost the entire touring party arrives in Bangladesh on the back of strong domestic campaigns, and Chauluka said selection pressure remains high for established players, who must continue to prove consistency to retain their places in the national reckoning.

“Most of the guys earned their spots through strong domestic seasons, and for the senior players it is about reinforcing their case for consistent selection,” he said.

Early training sessions have already tested the group physically, with searing heat proving a major challenge, particularly for the seamers. However, Chauluka expressed confidence that adaptation is underway ahead of the opening match.

Among those catching the eye is seamer Ernest Masuku, who Chauluka said has adjusted well to the conditions and looks physically sharp.

“He has ridden the wave well and looks strong for battle,” the coach said.

The Bangladesh surfaces, traditionally slow with low bounce and significant assistance for spin, are also expected to test Zimbabwe A’s batting discipline and technique.

Chauluka said training has already revealed noticeable turn and grip, adding an extra layer of challenge for batters.

Preparation methods have included deliberate exposure to heat, hydration management, ice baths and recovery sessions in the pool as the squad seeks to manage workload in difficult conditions.

He also emphasised alignment with the senior national team’s long-term vision, noting constant communication between structures as Zimbabwe builds depth across formats.

The tour follows a productive three-week training camp, which Chauluka believes has provided a solid platform for the challenges ahead.
