MUKURU sponsored Zimbabwe launched their T20 International series against Bangladesh with a commanding 32 run victory at Queens Sports Club, producing a complete performance built on disciplined bowling and composed batting.
The win reflected the hunger captain Sikandar Raza has demanded from his team since their impressive World Cup campaign, with the Chevrons showing greater intensity and belief against a strong Bangladesh side.
After being sent in to bat, Zimbabwe posted 170 for six, with Ryan Burl holding the innings together with a calm unbeaten 30. Brad Evans provided late acceleration, while Raza and Dion Myers chipped in with valuable runs after openers Tadiwanashe Marumani and Brian Bennett had given the hosts a positive start.
However, it was Zimbabwe’s bowling attack that turned the match in their favour. Seamers Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava combined superbly to dismantle Bangladesh’s batting order, taking eight wickets between them and leaving the visitors unable to build a successful chase.
Ngarava claimed the player of the match award after delivering crucial breakthroughs at key moments, including the dismissal of Bangladesh’s top scorer Yasar Ali. Muzarabani was equally impressive, producing a miserly spell of four overs for just 17 runs to keep the pressure on the visitors.
The bowling effort was complemented by sharp fielding, with Tashinga Musekiwa producing a standout contribution as Zimbabwe maintained control throughout the contest.
Raza said the team had taken valuable lessons from their World Cup experience and was determined to match the intensity shown by the world’s leading teams.
“I just think that as much as we had a great World Cup and we managed to give our country a lot of smiles, for me it was actually a rude awakening,” Raza said.
“The way we ended up going about our business in the Super Eight or how the other teams went about dealing with us made me think about how best we can match that intensity. The next time Zimbabwe find themselves in those positions, we can go blow to blow against those top nations.”
The Chevrons will now look to seal the three match series when they face Bangladesh again at Queens Sports Club, carrying confidence from a performance that underlined their growing competitiveness in the shortest format.
