THE stage is set for Zimbabwe’s biggest pool showdown after the Carling Black Label National Pool Tournament completed its regional qualifiers, producing 80 finalists who will battle for national honours in Masvingo on 11 July.
This year’s tournament reached 31 regions across the country and attracted strong participation from players, supporters and local communities, highlighting the growing popularity of the sport.
The national finals will feature 40 men and 40 women, with competitors chasing the top prize of US$2,500 and a pool table. The runner up will receive US$1,500, while third and fourth place finishers will pocket US$1,000 and US$500 respectively.
Among the men expected to attract attention are defending national champion Timothy Onida, Liberty Nyika, Adrian Shumba, Tinashe Desha and Tapiwanashe Muzanenhamo.
The women’s competition also promises exciting action with former champion Alice Chiota joined by Christine Sengwe, Perpetual Nyamayaro, Sandra Khumalo and Melody Mupanga among those chasing the title.
Delta Beverages Marketing Manager for the Lagers Business Unit, Kundayi Mawema, said the tournament continues to grow every year.
The company noted that women’s participation has continued to increase every year, a trend it hopes to strengthen through continued investment in the game.
Carling Black Label says it will continue supporting grassroots competitions, bar tournaments and partnerships with local traders to help develop more talent across Zimbabwe.
The national finals will start at 9 am in Masvingo, with members of the public invited to attend free of charge and support their regional champions.
