Government lauds successful table tennis championships
BEYOND the winners and the final standings, the Southern Africa Regional Table Tennis Championships delivered a bigger message of unity, development and shared ambition as nations came together in Zimbabwe for three days of high level competition.
The tournament, which concluded on Sunday, brought together players from South Africa, Angola, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and hosts Zimbabwe, creating a platform for athletes to test themselves against the region’s best while building valuable experience for future international assignments.
Government officials said the successful staging of the championships highlighted the growing importance of sport as a tool for development, cooperation and economic opportunities.
In a speech delivered on his behalf, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland East, Itayi Ndudzo, said sport continues to play a key role in Zimbabwe’s development agenda.
“The Government of Zimbabwe recognises sport as an important vehicle for national development,” Ndudzo said.
He said hosting regional competitions brings benefits that extend beyond the field of play.
“Events such as these also stimulate tourism, create business opportunities and strengthen regional cooperation,” he said.
Ndudzo added that the true value of the championships would be reflected through the connections created and the inspiration passed on to young athletes.
“The success of these championships will not only be measured by the medals won, but also by the friendships created, the experiences shared and the inspiration that our young athletes take back to their respective nations,” he said.
AUSC Region 5 president Kudzanani Motswagale said the tournament provided athletes with an important pathway towards bigger stages.
“Many of you will go on to represent your countries at continental championships, the African Games, the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the Olympic Games,” he said.
He urged competitors to embrace the values that define successful athletes.
“Winning is important, but integrity, humility and respect are the qualities that define true champions,” Motswagale said.
Sports and Recreation Commission director general Allen Mavunga congratulated all participants, saying every player contributed to the success of the regional event.
“Whether you leave with a medal or not, you have represented your country with pride and have contributed to the success of this regional event,” Mavunga said in remarks delivered by SRC official Adelaide Gumbo.
He said competitions of this nature are vital in preparing athletes for major international events.
“Regional competitions such as these are essential in preparing our athletes for higher levels of competition, including the African Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the Olympic Games.”
The championships also reinforced the need for continued investment in coaching, officiating and athlete development programmes as Southern African nations seek to raise the standard of table tennis and produce more competitors capable of excelling on the world stage.
