YOUTH were challenged to take up Government empowerment programmes and move from job-seeking to production and self-employment.
Speaking at the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) annual pilgrimage in Gokwe, Midlands Province, yesterday, Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire said young people must utilise skills development initiatives to contribute to national economic growth.
Minister Machakaire was representing President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the event, which coincided with the church’s Golden Jubilee marking 50 years since the death of its founder, Reverend Samuel Mutendi.
The Minister presented certificates to 450 youths who graduated in carpentry, bricklaying, catering, horticulture and other vocational disciplines.
“Government will continue to work with churches across the country to empower youths,” he said.
“We want to thank the church for being our moral compass, for fostering peace and unity in our communities. These programmes are meant to move us from job seeking to productivity and self-employment.”
Minister Machakaire said the best graduating students would receive start-up kits, while Government would continue supporting youth through the Empowerment Bank.
First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa donated 4 000 chicks and 7 000 bags of seed to the ZCC congregation. The donation was handed over by Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbara Rwodzi, who said it was meant to empower youths and women.
ZCC leader Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi commended Government for its empowerment programmes and applauded Dr Mnangagwa for initiatives such as Nhanga/Gota that promote women and girls.
Gokwe South MP and National Housing and Social Amenities Minister Professor Paul Mavima said the annual pilgrimages were transforming the community economically and spiritually.
“Our community is transformed every year due to your presence,” he said.
“We have witnessed the construction of a dam near this place, and we are constructing a bridge which will connect this place to various nearby communities and the country.”
The event was attended by Government officials and ZCC congregants from across the world.
