Castle Tankard Horserace Gallops Back for 65th Year with High Stakes

ZIMBABWE’s premier horse racing spectacle, the Castle Tankard, returns for its 65th edition on Saturday, May 10 at Borrowdale Racecourse, promising a day of elite competition, entertainment, and celebration.

Sponsored by Delta Beverages in partnership with the Mashonaland Turf Club, this Grade One event will feature a $50,000 stakes race, regional contenders, and performances by top artists, solidifying its legacy as a cornerstone of Zimbabwean sport and culture.

Since its inception in 1960, the Castle Tankard has grown into one of Southern Africa’s most prestigious horse racing events, attracting top-tier jockeys, trainers, and thoroughbreds.

This year’s edition, hosted at Harare’s iconic Borrowdale Racecourse from 10 AM to 7:30 PM, is expected to draw competitors from across the region, all vying for the coveted trophy and a share of the $50,000 prize pool.

Beyond the track, attendees will be treated to a festival-like atmosphere, complete with ice-cold Castle Lager beers, sizzling braais, and live performances by music heavyweights including Alick Macheso, Enzo Ishall, Delroy Shewe, Nisha T, Oriyano, and the Chillspot Family.

The event underscores Delta Beverages’ commitment to blending sport, entertainment, and community.

As Zimbabwe’s sole Grade One horserace a designation marking its elite status the Castle Tankard has long been a highlight for racing enthusiasts and a critical platform for regional talent.

Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to evolve while maintaining tradition, this year amplifying its entertainment lineup to cater to broader audiences.

Gates open at 10 AM, and races commence midday. Tickets are available at TicketPro outlets and online, and VIP packages offer premium views and hospitality.

Organizers urge early arrival to secure seating for the headline performances, set to begin after the final race.

With 65 years of history galloping forward, the 2025 Castle Tankard aims to cement its place not just as a sporting fixture, but as a unifying national tradition.
