Mukuru powers landmark 5th edition of St John’s Derby Day Festival as Zimbabwe’s youth sport takes centre stage

NEXT-GENERATION financial services platform Mukuru has officially returned as title sponsor of the St John’s Mukuru Derby Day Sports Festival, elevating the 2026 edition into a historic celebration of Zimbabwean youth sport and schoolboy rivalry.

Running from 27 April to 2 May, the fifth edition of the festival lands in a milestone year for St John’s College, which celebrates 40 years of academic and sporting excellence. Mukuru’s renewal marks the second year of a partnership that has transformed Derby Day into the country’s premier school sports showcase.

Mukuru leads the sponsorship charge alongside Health International and Titan Law, backing a festival uniquely designed to replicate the high-stakes intensity of traditional derby fixtures every single day for a full week. The innovative format gives fans access to the nation’s fiercest school rivalries in one central venue, without travelling across the country over multiple weekends.

The 2026 showcase will be the biggest yet, featuring a massive field of 49 teams across three core disciplines: 19 rugby schools, 14 football schools, and 16 hockey teams split between boys and girls.

Drawing approximately 15,000 spectators, the festival has become a magnet for talent. This year welcomes St Alban’s from South Africa, joining elite schools from Matabeleland, Manicaland, Midlands, Mashonaland Country Districts, and Harare.

Beyond the spectacle, the St John’s Mukuru Derby Day Festival has established itself as a vital scouting hub. Following last year’s attendance by the Sharks Academy, several participants have already transitioned into professional developmental ranks proof that the festival is a genuine launchpad for Africa’s future stars.

For Mukuru Zimbabwe Chief Executive Officer Doug Tait-Knight, the return to St John’s in its 40th year is about more than branding. It is about identity.

“At Mukuru, our mission is built on the resilience and ambition of the people we serve across the continent. We see that same spirit in these young athletes,” said Tait-Knight.

“Returning as title sponsor during St John’s milestone 40th year is a proud moment for us. This festival is more than a sporting event; it’s a high-performance platform where the next generation of African talent is discovered. We aren’t just sponsoring a tournament; we are investing in a community hub that mirrors our own commitment to excellence, unity, and the drive to cross new frontiers, whether on the pitch or in the world of financial inclusion.”

St John’s College Director of Sport Chris Fourie hailed the relationship as a model for how brands and schools can build legacy together.

“Our relationship with Mukuru is one we are incredibly proud of. Their support goes beyond sponsorship. It’s a genuine partnership that has helped us build this into a flagship event. Together, we are creating something truly special for our schools, our players, and the wider community,” Fourie said.

Mukuru’s commitment to Derby Day forms part of a broader investment in African sport and youth development. As a leading financial services platform in Africa, Mukuru provides safe, reliable, and convenient money transfers and financial services to over 17 million customers worldwide. With a footprint spanning more than 70 countries and operating across more than 500 remittance corridors, Mukuru has successfully executed more than 100 million transactions across multiple continents.

The company believes in the power of sport to unite and uplift communities. Its growing sports portfolio includes official sponsorship of the Zimbabwe Cricket Team, the recently held Mukuru Four Nations Tournament, and the Malawi netball Under-21 national team all underpinned by the same values of resilience, ambition, and community on display at Derby Day.

Established in 1986, St John’s College is a leading independent boys’ school in Harare, renowned for its holistic approach to education and its reputation as one of the country’s top sporting institutions. Driven by a culture of discipline and high performance, the College celebrates four decades of shaping leaders on and off the field in 2026.

Fans can experience the intensity from Monday 27 April to Saturday 2 May at St John’s College. Hockey action begins daily at 6:45 am, with rugby gates opening at 8:00 am.

Rugby VIP tickets are available at the St John’s College Bursar’s Office from Wednesday, 15 April 2026. General admission tickets for rugby and hockey will be available at the gate on match days. Entrance to all football matches is free.

From the first whistle to the final celebration, the 2026 St John’s Mukuru Derby Day Festival promises seven days of passion, pride, and performance a fitting tribute to 40 years of St John’s excellence, and a bold statement of Mukuru’s commitment to Africa’s next generation.
