Heist Suspect Flaunts Stolen Wealth in Borrowdale Luxury

A suspect accused of involvement in a brazen US$176,000 robbery in Ruwa has been revealed to have splurged the stolen cash on a luxurious lifestyle, including acquiring prime property in Borrowdale and multiple high-end vehicles.

Gladmore Fadzauone, one of the alleged gang members, used the loot to purchase a stand in Crowhill, Borrowdale, where he constructed a three-roomed cottage secured with a precast wall and equipped with a solar system.

Fadzauone’s extravagant spending spree also included buying a Nissan Caravan NV350, Toyota Hiace, Honda Fit, and Toyota Ipsum. He further invested in a four-roomed house at his rural village in Rusape and acquired two welding machines and a generator.

US$7,000 cash reward from accomplice Tawanda Makumana, allegedly given for helping him escape to Mozambique, added to his illicit gains.

Makumana, also arrested and appearing in court alongside Fadzauone, reportedly used stolen funds to purchase a Mini Cooper, a stand in Juru, Murehwa, and essentials for his family. Another suspect, Blessing Kennes, is already in custody.

The robbery, targeting businessman Joseph Maruta, occurred on June 7 at his girlfriend’s residence in Springvale, Ruwa, netting the gang US$176,050 cash, a Samsung S23 Ultra, and a firearm.

Detectives from CID Homicide tracked Fadzauone to Beitbridge, recovering US$5,300 cash and uncovering his asset acquisitions. Both Fadzauone and Makumana have implicated themselves and others in the crime, facing legal proceedings in Harare.

In June, Zimpapers media reported that the complainant, Harare businessman Maruta, collected US$181,000 from a farm in Kwekwe as payment for supplying potato seeds.

After returning home to Kambuzuma, he picked up his pistol, loaded with two magazines of 15 rounds each, and headed to his girlfriend Leoba Hunda’s home in Springvale, Ruwa.

Prosecutors alleged that on June 7, the gang of robbers proceeded to Hunda’s house and stole US$176,050 in cash.

The bulk of the money was in a plastic bag and US$6,000 was in Maruta’s jacket.

They also stole a Samsung S23 Ultra and a Derya pistol with serial numbers TG970-24L78774, with two fully charged magazines, before they disappeared from the scene.

Maruta woke up at around 5am and discovered that his money had been stolen.

He filed a report at ZRP Ruwa
