SHEFFIELD Wednesday’s latest addition, Zimbabwe international Marvelous Nakamba, made his debut for the club on Sunday, featuring in the second half of their 4-0 loss to Swansea City in the English Championship at the (link unavailable) Stadium.
Nakamba, who joined Sheffield Wednesday last week after mutually terminating his contract with Luton Town, was introduced by manager Darren Moore in the 62nd minute, replacing the injured Kieran Westwood. The midfielder was deployed in central midfield, where he played a more defensive role, making several key interventions as Wednesday struggled to contain Swansea’s attacks.
The 30-year-old, who has represented Zimbabwe at international level, showed flashes of his quality, completing 21 passes and winning one tackle, but ultimately couldn’t prevent the hosts from scoring four goals, with Sheffield Wednesday conceding three goals in the first half. Nakamba’s debut was marked with a yellow card in stoppage time, following a late challenge on an opponent in the 90th minute.
“Marvelous came on and did what he does best, which is break up play and get in the way,” Moore said post-match. “He’s a good player and he’ll be a great addition to our squad.”
Nakamba’s arrival at Sheffield Wednesday has been seen as a boost to the team’s midfield, and his experience in the English Championship is expected to be valuable for the remainder of the season. The Owls are currently 20th in the table, and will look to bounce back from this defeat when they host Hull City next weekend.
