Zimbabwe banks on home advantage for Region 5 Table Tennis Champs

Zimbabwe is banking on home advantage as it intensifies preparations for the upcoming Region 5 Table Tennis Championships set to run from 10 – 12 July in Mashonaland East.

The Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union (ZTTU) says preparations are progressing well ahead of the regional showcase, with the technical team focusing on ensuring athletes are physically, technically and mentally ready for competition.

ZTTU believes playing on home soil could provide a crucial boost for Team Zimbabwe through crowd support, familiarity with local conditions and reduced travel fatigue.

Officials, however, stressed that the focus remains on thorough preparation rather than relying solely on home support.

According to the union, athletes have undergone programmes centred on physical conditioning, tactical preparation, match fitness, mental preparation, as well as sports science and performance analysis.

Zimbabwe will face stiff competition from regional powerhouses South Africa, Angola and Zambia, nations that have traditionally dominated table tennis competitions in the region.

Despite the challenge, Team Zimbabwe remains optimistic about competing strongly for medals.

The championships are also expected to provide a major boost to the development of table tennis in the country by improving exposure for local athletes and strengthening technical expertise within the sport.

ZTTU said hosting the event would create valuable experience for coaches, umpires, administrators and volunteers involved in organising international competitions.

The tournament is also being viewed as an important platform for emerging Zimbabwean players to gain international exposure and test themselves against top regional talent.

Among Zimbabwe’s objectives are successfully hosting a professional tournament, improving competitiveness within the region, strengthening athlete development pathways and exposing young players to high-level competition.

The union noted that lessons from previous Region 5 events highlighted the importance of structured preparation, international exposure and the integration of sports science into athlete development programmes.

ZTTU said it continues to organise provincial competitions, school leagues, national championships and development initiatives aimed at growing the sport across the country.

However, the association acknowledged that more investment is still required in infrastructure, competition opportunities and commercial sponsorship to adequately prepare athletes for international competition.

The championships are expected to attract some of the region’s top table tennis talent as Zimbabwe seeks to use the tournament to further elevate the profile of the sport locally.
