DELTA Corporation’s investment in education and community has transformed the life of Karoi-born Crayton Maurikira, who graduated from the University of Zimbabwe in 2026 with an Upper Second Class degree in Actuarial Sciences after overcoming financial hardship and setbacks that threatened to derail his education.
Raised by a single mother, Maurikira grew up in circumstances where pursuing higher education was far from guaranteed. Limited financial resources presented a constant challenge, but he remained determined to continue with his studies.
His fortunes began to change when he moved from a rural school to Karoi Town while he was in Form Five. It was during this period that Delta stepped in to support his education, beginning a relationship that would continue through his university studies.
For Maurikira, the support came at a critical point in his life.
“Delta became my father,” he said, describing the role the company played in helping him pursue his education when his family could not afford to provide everything he needed.
With Delta’s assistance, Maurikira completed his secondary education and eventually enrolled at the University of Zimbabwe to study Actuarial Sciences.
Getting into university, however, did not bring an end to his struggles.
Maurikira did not have a laptop or an internet-enabled phone, both important tools for his university studies. The little money he had was used to meet basic needs, leaving him unable to afford the technology required for his academic work.
A neighbour later came to his aid by giving him a laptop and a phone. The assistance offered some relief, but another setback followed when the devices were stolen.
The loss placed Maurikira in a difficult position. Unable to immediately replace the equipment, he returned home and turned to gold panning and tobacco farming to raise money for another laptop.
For two years, he worked to raise enough money to resume his studies.
Eventually, his efforts paid off. He managed to buy a laptop, but by then he had fallen two years behind in his academic journey.
Determined to rebuild his future, Maurikira approached Mr. Chirandu from Delta Corporation and shared his story. After listening to the challenges he had endured, Chirandu helped him secure an attachment at Claxon Actuaries.
The placement gave Maurikira an opportunity to gain practical experience in his chosen profession and renewed his confidence that the years of hardship had not been in vain.
Delta’s support continued beyond the classroom. Maurikira later secured another opportunity at ZB Life Towers, where he worked for about a year, gaining further professional experience while pursuing his ambitions.
After years of interruptions, financial difficulties and hard work, Maurikira eventually returned to the path that had once seemed in danger of disappearing altogether.
In 2026, that journey culminated at the University of Zimbabwe, where he graduated with an Upper Second Class degree in Actuarial Sciences.
The achievement also carried special significance for his family: Maurikira became the first person in his family to graduate from university.
His graduation represents a remarkable turnaround for a young man who, only a few years earlier, had been forced to exchange university lecture rooms for gold panning and tobacco farming simply to raise enough money to continue his education.
For Maurikira, Delta’s contribution went beyond financial assistance. The company provided educational support and helped connect him with opportunities that allowed him to gain experience and continue working toward a professional career.
