Delta targets changing tastes with new Zambezi MIST

DELTA Beverages is widening its premium beer portfolio with the introduction of Zambezi MIST, a new 4% alcohol beverage aimed at consumers seeking a lighter drinking experience without moving away from traditional beer.

The new product, which draws its identity from the established Zambezi Lager brand, has been positioned as a smoother alternative for Zimbabwe’s changing beer market and contemporary social occasions.

Delta Corporation marketing director Irimayi Muzorewa officially launched the lager as the beverages giant moves to broaden consumer choice within its premium segment.

Brewed from 100% malt, Zambezi MIST carries an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 4%, with Delta describing the product as full-flavoured but smoother and easier drinking.

The company is marketing the lager under the tagline “All Beer. All Easy”, reflecting its strategy of retaining the traditional characteristics of beer while offering a more moderate proposition.

The launch represents an extension of the Zambezi franchise rather than the introduction of an entirely unrelated beer brand, allowing Delta to leverage the recognition already enjoyed by Zambezi Lager.

Zambezi MIST is also being rolled out in one-way packaging, including cans and non-returnable bottles, as Delta targets consumers drinking across different social settings.

The company expects the product to find its space at braais, music festivals, weekend outings and informal gatherings, with convenience forming a major part of its positioning.

While established beer brands have traditionally competed heavily around taste and strength, Zambezi MIST is being pitched around what Delta sees as an emerging combination of premium quality, moderation and convenience.

The company is particularly targeting socially active consumers who want the characteristics associated with conventional lager but prefer a smoother drinking profile.

Delta Beverages head of marketing for lagers Kundayi Mawema and members of the company’s marketing team were among those who attended the product launch.

The introduction of Zambezi MIST will now be followed by a nationwide marketing and sampling campaign as Delta seeks to establish the product in Zimbabwe’s competitive beer market.

The campaign is expected to include small-scale events, consumer activations and sampling initiatives across the country over the coming months.

For Delta, the challenge will be to establish MIST as a distinct proposition while capitalising on the heritage of the Zambezi name.

Its arrival also gives consumers another option within the brewer’s portfolio and signals Delta’s attempt to respond to evolving drinking preferences through product differentiation.
