Mukuru-Backed Chevrons Gain Crucial Tournament Momentum After Beating Sri Lanka

MUKURU-sponsored Zimbabwe secured an impressive six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in a thrilling T20 World Cup league match on February 19 at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka chose to bat first and posted a competitive total of 178 for 7 in their 20 overs.

Despite the strong score, Zimbabwe chased down the target successfully with three balls remaining.

Sri Lanka’s innings was led by Pathum Nissanka, who scored a well-played 62 off 41 balls, hitting eight boundaries.

Pavan Rathnayake supported him with a quick 44 from 25 deliveries, while Kusal Perera added 22 runs at the top. However, Zimbabwe’s bowlers performed well under pressure.

Graeme Cremer stood out with 2 wickets for 27 runs, and both Blessing Muzarabani and Bradley Evans claimed two wickets each to keep Sri Lanka under control.

In reply, Zimbabwe showed confidence and determination throughout their chase. Brian Bennett anchored the innings with an unbeaten 63 off 48 balls, providing stability at the top. Captain Sikandar Raza played a match-changing knock of 45 runs from just 26 balls, smashing four sixes.

Tadiwanashe Marumani contributed 34 runs, and Tony Munyonga finished strongly with quick runs at the end.

Zimbabwe reached 182 for 4 in 19.3 overs, completing a well-deserved win. Although Dushan Hemantha picked up two wickets and Dunith Wellalage bowled economically, Sri Lanka could not stop Zimbabwe’s strong finish.

The victory gives Chevrons valuable momentum in the tournament.
