A MEMORIAL service will be held this morning at Nyamhunga Stadium for the 44 people who died when the RIDA Mbuya Nehanda ferry sank on Tuesday afternoon.
The service will be led by Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Daniel Garwe.
Minister Garwe is accompanied by Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbara Rwodzi, Deputy Minister Tongai Mnangagwa, Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo, and heads of Government departments.
Speaking ahead of the service, Minister Garwe said he had been sent by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to assess the situation and establish facts around the disaster.
“I have been sent by the President to assess the situation and have a clear picture of what transpired on the fateful day,” said Minister Garwe.
“The President said we should get the right information following numerous conflicting narratives on social media and various platforms.”
Minister Garwe said the memorial service would not bring closure to search and recovery efforts, which remain ongoing.
Thousands of people have gathered at Nyamhunga Stadium to pay tribute to the 44 victims.
The bodies of the 44 deceased passengers have since arrived at the stadium, awaiting the official start of the memorial service.
