UZ Wolves Retain Zone 6 Men’s Volleyball Title

THE University of Zimbabwe (UZ) Wolves men’s volleyball team defended their Zone 6 title, crushing their opponents Alianca Maputo of Mozambique in straight sets in the Zone VI Senior Male Indoor Volleyball Championships in Polokwane, South Africa on Sunday.

Wolves, coached by high-flying gaffer Gift Chirebvu, wrapped up the match in dominant fashion, winning 25-22, 25-23, 25-22 over their determined opponents who had not lost a single set in group play prior to the final. The victory marked the team’s second consecutive Zone 6 title, confirming their status as one of the top teams in the region.

“This final represented more than a trophy—it was a benchmark,” Chirebvu told NewsOnLine in his post-match comments.

“Entering the final, we faced an opponent that had not lost a single set in group play. They were disciplined, consistent, and statistically dominant. Our response was controlled and decisive.”

Chirebvu praised his team’s preparation and focus.

“Defending a title carries a different level of pressure, particularly when prior success is questioned,” he said.

“Preparation for this tournament was not without challenges, and there were moments of uncertainty leading up to the competition. Despite obstacles, the team remained committed through every practice, adjustment, and preparation phase.”

The coach highlighted the team’s growth and consistency as key factors in their success.

“This title defense confirmed our consistency and growth as a team. It demonstrated that our previous success was not circumstantial, but the result of sustained effort, discipline, and execution,” added Chirebvu.

“We approached the tournament with improved strategy, focus, and accountability, and the outcome reflected that work.”

The Wolves’ success was fueled by standout performances from Michael Mapfumo, who was named Most Valuable Player and best opposite hitter, and Mathew Msamanyada, who was named best outside hitter. Other individual award winners from the Wolves pack included Kudzai Mazviro (best libero), Nigel Kadumba (best setter), and Takudzwa Mashaka (best 1st blocker).

Chirebvu lauded his team’s performance in delivering the title.

“To the team: this was not only a successful title defense, but a reaffirmation of standards, work ethic, and competitive identity. That is what defines championship performance,” he said.
