Gweru rolls out door-to-door TB screening in high-density suburbs

THE City of Gweru will run a free door-to-door tuberculosis screening campaign from June to the end of September 2026, targeting Mkoba, Mtapa and Senga suburbs.

Mayor Martin Chivhoko told a full council meeting yesterday that trained community health workers will conduct the screenings, urging residents to participate.

“Tuberculosis remains a threat in our community, but it is a curable and treatable disease,” Chivhoko said.

“To confront this challenge head-on, a critical public health campaign will be held from June to the end of September 2026.”

Health workers will go door-to-door in Mkoba, Mtapa and Senga, he said.

“These workers are not intruders; they are our protectors. When they knock, welcome them,” Chivhoko said.

He said the screening is free and confidential. Residents needing further care will be referred to major health facilities in the city.

Health experts say early detection and treatment of TB prevent transmission and improve recovery outcomes.

The campaign is part of the city’s efforts to strengthen disease surveillance, improve access to healthcare and reduce the burden of communicable diseases.
