Two contractor workers die in separate incidents at Bikita Minerals

BIKITA Minerals has confirmed the deaths of two contractor employees in separate incidents at its lithium mining operations in Masvingo Province last week.

Dump truck operator Thomas Kaliveni (40), who was employed by WGB Kinsey & Company, died on 6 June 2026 at around 7:45pm after sustaining injuries in an accident at the mine’s waste dump site.

In a separate incident, a security guard employed by Rebnek Security was found dead while on duty in the early hours of 7 June 2026. The mine said the employee was discovered unresponsive during routine supervisory checks.

The identity of the security guard has not yet been released.

In a statement, Bikita Minerals expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.

“Bikita Minerals extends its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased,” the company said. “The safety, health and well-being of everyone working at our operations remain a core priority.”

The company said details surrounding both incidents would not be released while investigations are ongoing.

“Out of respect for the families and ongoing police investigations, no further information will be shared at this stage,” it said.

Bikita Minerals, owned by China’s Sinomine Resource Group, is one of Africa’s largest lithium producers and has expanded its operations in recent years to meet growing global demand for battery minerals.

The mine relies heavily on contractors for key operations, including haulage, earthmoving and security services.

Authorities, including the police and the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, are expected to investigate both incidents in line with Zimbabwe’s workplace safety regulations.
